PoW mail from Germany via Portugal, WW2
I have a query from fellow member Simon McArthur. He has two items sent from British PoWs in Germany in 1941 to the Hotel Parque, Estoril, Portugal, before being redirected to the uk. Was this a practise used throughout the war or just at that time and was it just for airmail items? He says:
I assume the Hotel Parque in Estoril, Portugal was used as a redirection site purely for airmail items at the time although the mail would have arrived in Lisbon as there was a regular Lufthansa service. As I understand it PoW mail was carried under the auspices of the International Red Cross. There was a supplemental payment for airmail as surface PoW mail was free. Had it been surface mail it would not have gone to Portugal I assume.
See the attached image - they certainly appear to be very characterful items. Can anyone help Simon with his question, or at least add some useful observations? And another question from me, actually: they both seem to be addressed to a Mrs Campbell - who was she: was she anyone in particular?
Thanks
Nick

Thank you for the explaination. Very interesting.
