Zoom 7pm - (Military Stationery)

Another open meeting for our August Zoom meeting - anything from your collection, once again hosted by Nick Colley.  For this meeting we had 19 attendees.

RAF WW2 & Postal Stationery: from Ian Muchall a display of RAF stationary and associated items including Air Mail Letter Cards from British and East African military post offices 1942-45; Indian Air Letters, including the blue triangle issue and an Xmas Air Letter from 1945; Postagram envelopes, registered official paid envelopes (RAF Form 2001) with headings of either On His or Her Majesty’s Service; and a Forces Air Letter in 1970 from Majunga.

Wartime Stationery Reused Covers: a display by Jim Mackay of both WW2 and later reused wartime stationery items, including economy labels to re-use envelopes, and a variety of other labels connected with War Savings, Patriotic items, the Merchant Navy and charity labels mainly used on civilian mail, as well as overprinted green honour envelopes, as well as envelopes made out of maps.

Canadian Mail: John Cranmer, who collects material with a Canadian connection, showed V-Mail from a Canadian (RCAF) serviceman in the Middle East who sent it through the post instead of having it photographed.

Military Telegraphs and Stationery: a 10 sheet display from Michael Dobbs, including a range of telegraphs and message forms starting with a Message Form from the Sudan Military Telegraphs in 1898, a WW1 Naval Signal form and a 1937 Message Form, a DRLS cover and various certificates of acceptance for the Courier Service (numbered in the FF Form series).

Royal Navy Stationery WW2: a short display by Nick Colley showing items including the 1st Submarine Flotilla, H.M.I.S. Hamla, the Fleet Mail Office at Port Tewfik (an HMS registered letter receipt on form S.579b) and the Greek Navy; this included the use of OHMS labels and envelopes.

Army Post Offices and Unit Cachets WW1: this was an introduction to a research project by Chris Grimshaw into WW1 APO/FPOs and military cachets.  He showed a selection of covers including from units such as the Royal Garrison Artillery, Remount Depots, Infantry Base Depots, Royal Marine Artillery Workshops and a Prisoner of War Company.
