Henry Ulyatt in the DLI around 1908 or so
My partner, not a philatelist fortunately! has been researching her ancestors and has come to something of a brick wall regarding her grandfather Henry Ulyatt, born in 1870 in Chesterfield.
He was a sergeant in the DLI and served in Cork 1908 - 1912 (at least, Philomena says). Whilst in Cork he met his future wife Ellen (Nellie) Geary. He may also have been in South Africa with the DLI as he is reputed to have contracted malaria there.
He ended his military days at Fenham Barracks in Newcastle on Tyne and worked as the gatekeeper at the shipyards in Sunderland where he died in 1933.
Times in Ireland at the turn of the last century were turbulent to say the least. Philomena has traced her father to Cork during his time there and the burning of Cork, including burning down the pub where her future grandmother worked. It was rebuilt and we visited it last month where there was a photo on the wall (1908) of the publican and P's grandmother aged about 20.
Any details members may be able to provide will be very welcome.
