Examiner 1649

Purely in the interests of getting this forum underway with a first post, and to illustrate how the new forum presents posts with images: I have attached an envelope which contained a letter sent to my father James Bruce, who was staying temporarily at the hotel in the address shown. The letter was from his mother living in Dovercourt, Harwich and was sent at the end of September 1942. Are there records that show who individual censor examiners were, from the examiner number? (I am not a postal historian and so apologies if this is a bit basic)

My father was a merchant seaman and was a survivor of the sinking of Empire Bede, just off Cuba. He was travelling in convoy TAW13 which was attacked by German Uboat U-553. The ship had been loaded with Carbon Black and TNT. The first page of the letter contained in the envelope shows his mother writing that "it was nice to hear of you being saved again." In 1941 he served on SS Cockaponset which was sunk, just off Iceland, by U-556.

I am thankful for being here and able to set this forum up šŸ˜€
