3rd Battalion N Rhodesia Regt.

Can a member throw any light on what is happening to this Air Mail Letter Card?

From what I can see:

  1. It was written by a 3NNR lieutenant on 5 July 1944.

  2. It was at EA APO#72 on 7 July. Proud says this is Yatta, Kenya.

  3. The passed by censor stamp is boxed EA no. 11/01 top right.

  4. The deputy chief censor cachet on left reveals the AMLC was received there on 9 July

  5. The cachet states air letter was returned from the deputy chief censor on 11 July to an indistinct address.

  6. Rear has the open by censor seal plus an EA APO#2 Nairobi 11 July.

  7. Has the small rear cachet been added by the censor? The inking seems heavier than the other cachets.

My own research reveals 3NRR was at Yatta for 7 months but left Mombasa for Ceylon on 7 July.

Help please.

I have often wondered about Type EAB8 censor markers, but I personally believe that they were applied by a censor where the mail was posted, as I find it hard to believe that there were so many many censors in the office in Nairobi. Also I read somewhere that EAB8 markers with the A prefix were used on mails from Zanzibar. I believe that the mail most probably would have travelled on the daily mail truck. Extra censorship was most probably applied because of the fact that the troops were departing for Ceylon that day.
