Passed By Censor M Rackman Lieut RNR

I have attached a copy of a WW1 Royal Navy card undated other than Feb 20th with the krag XXXX cancellation and under the wavy line the rough cut cachet, which appears to read: Passed by Censor M Rackman Lieut RNR

This is very poorly set, the letted M A N are inverted, so reads as a W - but I think my reading is correct.

Does anyone have any reference to this. I initially thought this was 2 Lt Basil Rackman with the Hawke Battalion, it would fit with him writing to a Lowestoft Suffolk address, however the M before Rackman would throw this out.

Any comments welcome?

Thank you Peter

HI NIck,

Thank you, I can now see Rackstraw as the name, gets rather blurred with the handwriting and the wavy line.

I managed to locate him in the National Archives Michael Rackstraw DOB 1892. Unfortunately the card does not have a year on it, but in 1916 with HMHS China, requested relief May 17 and went to HMS Zaria in the Orkneys, then Chatham same year, assigned to Naval Party Greyhound II ?, training etc and appears to stay at Chatham or Victory until Demob in May 1919.

Your help is much appreciated.

Pete
