British Naval Mail WW1 from Crete

Hello All

Could anyone help with this naval censor mark? Dimensions: oval 31x19mm, text: 21x3.5mm

And I would be grateful for any help with the handwriting on this cover. Is the sender related to the British consul on Crete? the cover was part of a small collection of Syros related material.

best regards, Peter

(nothing on the back side of the cover)

Well, the nearest we can get to that censor mark in Gould’s work is 7B5, but with the C missing. He gives the dimensions of the oval as 32x20mm, so pretty close to yours. He also notes that the reported item is from Greece, so that would match your Cretan connection. Sadly, we have no idea yet what ship used that mark. As regards the sender (and his handwriting), I would guess that either he wrote the item while the vessel was in a heavy sea, or he had overindulged in the ship’s wardroom. Seriously, though, I can’t comment on any connection the writer might, or might not, have had to the British Consul at Canea. That’s the best I can do, Peter.
