Wimbledon Camp

As members of society are aware I am working up-dating the Kingston Army Camps list. Wimbledon Camp is one of the early Victorian Camps.

Wimbledon Camp was used for National Rifle Association Meeting prior to moving to Bisley Camp in 1890. The Camp was only open for about 4 weeks each year around end June and early July ever year for the meeting.

After speaking to Patrick Awcock who is working on up-dating the Skeleton Postmark book. He has seen Skeletons in addition to the normal counter marks for Wimbledon Camp and he was asking me, but really if any member whether we had seen any examples of these skeleton postmarks?

This made me have look at the data I have from the Wimbledon Camp and what queries this raised. I am aware it was used again on later dates but not for the National Rifle Association Meeting but as an Army Camp. At present not managed to sort out the information of my research these later opening as army camp.

The earliest date I have found in the in the impression books sent on 27th June 1867 (Post 55 38) with 'SW' at the bottom. According to Kingston list he reports the version without the 'SW' at this date.

Has any one seen version with without the SW from this date (1867) or before 1873?

ree

A new impression was sent on the 17th June 1873 without the SW (Post 55 45). Which was not year reported by Kingston for this impression and all the dates quoted are before dates 1870 with the exception 1911 which was not National Rifle Association Meeting as that was at Bisley Camp in that year.

Has anyone examples of this version dated from 1873 or after?

ree

A duplex was sent on 16th June 1877 (Post 55 48) , which according to Kingston was only reported used in this year.

Has anyone seen examples of this Duplex actual being used?

ree

I have not found the other duplex reported by Kingston as 'Wimbledon Camp Z. 801.' in 1880 as yet in the impression books, but not managed to date to research that year as yet in the archive.

I would like to know if examples exist of this 2nd Duplex with dates?

If members could put pictures of examples on the forum this would help in collating the information.
