Shapes

I attach scans of 3 covers; 2 from WW2 and 1 from Kenya during the Mau Mau uprising. My question is: what do the printed shapes on the air letters - the solid triangle from Calcutta and the triangle outline from Egypt - signify? Similarly, what does the black ink rubber diamond

from Kenya signify?

Mike,

Would it not also be worth a mention that the black 'diamond' machine marks were also used in WW2 in the run up to D-Day as a security measure to prevent the location of troops being disclosed.
