Capt. David Mason Taggart - Distinguished Service Cross (GV)
I have received the following enquiry from Canada - is anyone able to assist please?
I have a cover postmarked at Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada dated June 20, 1918, addressed to Captain David Mason Taggart, DSC on the Grace Line vessel SS Santa Luisa in Panama. I have found the notice of his award in the London Gazette (p. 2305, Supp. 30536) under the Honours to the Mercantile Marine. Apparently it was for sinking a German submarine in June 1917.
I'd like to learn more details of that encounter. Can you suggest where I could make inquiries ?
Many thanks, Mike

I have also found the following information or links relating to this person - you will see that the newspaper extract refers to "His Majesty's transport Celia" as the vessel Capt Taggart joined. This was torpedoed in the Mediterranean on 2 February 1918, Taggart was awarded the DSC as notyified in The London Gazette of 19 February 1918 and he was presented with the DSC by the King on 16 December 1918. Having found other links, I am not sure that the vessel Taggart was on sank a submarine, but was itself sank by a submarine? More infor required please!
