WWI Registered Mail

Afternoon Team

As part of my ongoing study of WWI registered mails and the registration labels used, further new material has come to light since I published part one of my studies in the Journal, No 329

I attach a written up page showing a registered cover from 37th Brigade in February 1916. What majkes this cover interesting is the use of the earlier Type 1 labels with 'R' on the right. These were contary to UPU requirements and replaced by the 'R' on left labels by 1910.

Whilst Scotland contionued to use the earlier type until the 1930's. I've seen examples of Naval mail most likely from Scottish ports with these labels but this is the first I record through the APO system. Has anyone seen or have other examples of army usage?

Hi Chris,

Interesting cover and I have not seen this type label used on any FPO or APO. I also have seen several on Naval mail from the period, typically earlier from Scotland and then several with additional I.S Section Labels applied. Michael Gould refers to this in Appendix B (page 203) of his book on Naval Censorship. I assume there may have been some old stock, but 1916 is rather late to be using up, with FPO 37 having been in France from 6 months plus.

I will let you know if anything turns up.

Peter
